Tails Tuxedos

What are tails tuxedos
Tails tuxedos are more formerly known as fulldress men's formal wear. The term tails refers to the tail of fabric on the back of the tuxedo jacket. The tails tuxedo jacket is different from a standard tuxedo because of the cut on the front of the tail coat (diamond-bottom cut at the waist-front) which gracefully continues to just behind the mid-side of your waist. Then a long tail of fabric continues down to below the back of the knee which is split with a pleat for added elegance.

Tails Tuxedo Shirts

A tails tuxedo jacket can be worn with several cuts of tuxedo shirt. The first and most appropriate is the wing collar pique formal shirt. This is because the classic look of the style demands the shirt. Pique is the material that adorns the front of the shirt. It looks like the pattern you'd find on a basic paper towel. The next option is a laydown collar shirt. These are the tuxedo shirts with a business shirt collar.

Though the pique front is the most appropriate, pleated shirt fronts are acceptable. These types of shirts have pleats of material running vertically down the front of the shirt ranging from a pintuck (groove) up to one full inch in width. Pleat width does not change on the same shirt. The most popular width pleat is the one quarter inch pleat.

Mandarin or collarless shirts should not be worn with a tails tuxedo since they are conflicting styles. Tails tuxedos are classic, while mandarin and collarless shirts are contemporary.

Tails Tuxedo Accessories
There are several accessory options with a tails tuxedo however all formal accessories are not made equal. The basic requirements for accessories for a tails tuxedo are as follows. You can wear bow tie or a four-in-hand tie with a wing collar shirt or laydown collar shirt but a euro-tie can't be worn with a laydown collar because of the flare at the top of the tie which pushes the collar outward. The bottom of the collar would be popping outward from the shirt and look unfinished.

While any cummerbund or sash can be worn, this is not true for vests. There is no debate about this, a vest must be height adjustable to wear with a tails tuxedo unless you own the vest and can alter it. The bottom of the vest should end within two inches below the bottom of the front of the tails tuxedo jacket. Most fullback vests do not have height adjusters and if renting, you won't be able to alter the vest's height. Instead we have the option of backless vests. A backless vest is height and waist adjustable so you can adjust it to the proper length which matches the front of the tails tuxedo.
